Increasing access to and uptake of postpartum family planning (PPFP)–family planning services started during the 12 months following delivery–has the potential to connect many women with life-saving information and services that prevent unintended pregnancies and avoid potentially adverse health outcomes.
This report summarizes the findings from a research study to evaluate the added value of leadership, management, and governance capacity-building interventions on a PPFP service-delivery improvement project in Cameroon.
The study was the result of collaboration between two USAID-funded projects, the Leadership, Management, and Governance (LMG) Project and the Evidence to Action (E2A) Project.
Results of the study showed that the Leadership Development Program Plus (LDP+) intervention led to a statistically significant increase in the number of women who received PPFP counseling during antenatal care and postnatal care compared to a standalone clinical training.
The findings suggest that leadership and management play an important role in health service-delivery improvement. Furthermore, study participants consistently mentioned the ability of leaders and managers to either facilitate or hinder family planning improvement initiatives.
