Making Sense of Challenges: Engaging Religious Leaders to End Child Marriage

Twelve million girls are married every year before they reach 18—affecting girls’ access to health, education, and other opportunities. It exposes girls to violence throughout their lives and traps them in a cycle of poverty.

Girls Not Brides was joined by Dr. Elisabet le Roux from the Unit for Religion and Development Research at Stellenbosch University for a webinar to explore the challenges that practitioners may face when working with religious leaders and communities to address child marriage. In this webinar, they discuss findings from new research released in November 2018, “What lies beneath? Tackling the roots of religious resistance to ending child marriage,” which aims to better understand effective strategies for working with some religious leaders in the interest of their communities.
