Hi Sylvia and all of us. The newest thing in Coaching is that everyone who’s no longer in a Line, Supervisory or Management job introduces him/herself to others as a Mentor/Coach. What, may I ask is a mentor/Coach?

    • Hi Peter, how are you, and hi to the community. This is an interesting development. It is true that the current trend is towards emphasizing the role of the leader, at whatever level, as a developer of people. After all, it is not the leader who produces results, it is the people on the frontlines who are doing the work, and the leader has to make…[Read more]

      • Hi Sylvia!

Have to say that I love your explanation of coach vs. mentor. It really resonated with me as I am currently “coaching” two inexperienced nonprofit co-founders on their journey of launching a nonprofit. I appreciated “It is a vehicle to help you get from where you are now to where you want to go. This is what coaches do: partner…[Read more]

      • Hi Sylvia and Julie, thank you.

Sylvia, I find the origins of Mentor vs. Coach quite fascinating and had never heard of that. Also, especially when tied to your mention of Mentoring as implying a junior-senior approach (“gentle ‘look-upward’ hand-holding” is how I prefer to think of it); and to Julie’s point about the Coach as a…[Read more]

        • Dear Sylvia:
We have worked together and share learning and experiences for very long time ago and I never stop learning new things from you!. I have worked in the coaching environment for many years and I have never realize the origin of the work “coach”. Thank you!

I wanted to share this blog on organizational transformation that makes note of coaching: Organizational transformation starts at the top! https://leadernet.org/organizational-transformation-starts-at-the-top/ It brings up an important point that the challenge in coaching is not that leaders are opposed to it, but that there are pressures to not…[Read more]

Another good article from Travis Bradberry on communications. Again, sorry for cross-postings.

Some of the information is a bit basic – you’ve heard it before – but it is always good to have a “refresher.”

Why We Struggle to Communicate (and How to Fix It)…[Read more]

we are going to have a LN seminar on the LDP(+) from 26-28 May. I will be facilitating the last day which will be about coaching. I am wondering if anyone in this community has particular insights, or questions, or reports that relate to coaching in the LDPs to help me prepare the readings for that day. Thank you

I just posted in “Docs” a document with examples of good coaching questions for a variety of situations. It is in French (use Bing Translate) or go to the website that is mentioned at the top of the document where you will find many more questions.

I have posted a document (in French) on coaching compared to other interventions to improve performance. I have the English somewhere and will post as soon as I find it, otherwise use Bing or Google Translate (Bing is better)

Two of the things I find most difficult in coaching are (1) not judging and (2) not giving advice.
Judging is so ingrained into our way of looking at the world. We can’t seem to help ourselves to paste labels on things and people: good, bad, stupid, smart, immoral, enlightened, conservative, etc. With that label come all sorts of associated…[Read more]

    • Sylvia, thanks for this great comment! I was coaching someone a few months ago and he was telling a story that I could “totally relate to” – or so I thought. It was about a family member who had a drinking problem. Well, I’d been in just the same situation – a family dynamic with alcoholism as part of it. Because this triggered my own memories…[Read more]

      • Good lesson! Giving advice is as you both say the bigger enemy of good coaching. Giving the other person our perspective, interpretation of facts or other positive experiences may work but only after going deeper in his/her own experiences and interpretations and always asking for permission and giving them as options not “solutions”
        I have had…[Read more]
